Open Field Engagement Portraits // Southwest Virginia

April 7, 2021

This past month when I was in Blacksburg, Virginia visiting family I was able to meet up with one of my couples for a fun open field engagement session. Kaitlyn & Zach first got engaged around two years ago and we did an engagement session then, but life and COVID happened and their wedding wound up being postponed a few times. It has been a frustrating experience for them, so I am really glad we were able to take this time to do celebrate their relationship. Kaitlyn likes to tell me that these sessions “feel like therapy” and I love that.

When trying to figure out locations, I remembered this beautiful open area that I used to shoot at a lot when we lived in Blacksburg; the Heritage Community Park and Natural Area. It’s a massive area with plenty of space to run around and have fun. I know at first the thought of an open field sounds boring, but actually, empty space locations make for some of my favorite photos. When you’re not splitting the focus with the background, you’re able to keep full focus on the couple. It also forces me to get closer and get more intimate shots!

Kaitlyn did a killer job picking out her outfits. I absolutely loved the orange pants she brought and how just changing her shirt completely switched up the entire vibe of her outfit. Don’t be afraid to make bold choices like colored pants when planning your engagement session outfits. Statement pieces like these orange pants or a fun blouse can really help set a feeling for your photos.
