Jeff reached out to me while planning a trip to Washington, D.C. with his then girlfriend Rachel. He knew he wanted to propose to her on their trip with a photographer to capture the proposal, but he wasn’t sure where or how to pop the question. That’s where I came in! When I found out he was planning to propose, I was immediately hooked. We hopped on a video call, and I shared images of my favorite Washington, D.C. backdrops as well as some tips to make the proposal go off without a hitch. A few weeks later, I was sitting on the steps of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial listening to a podcast and waiting to see them walk up the stairs.
The area was perfectly open. Not a single person in sight. I was pumped – this was going to be amazing! I saw Jeff & Rachel round the curve of the Tidal Basin and make their way up the steps. At that exact moment, an entire kindergarten class swarmed the area we had planned to use! I could see the defeat in Jeff’s eyes as he made eye contact with me. I quickly texted him not to panic and he set off to distract Rachel. In the next twenty minutes, the class finished their lunches and moved along. The space was finally free! I texted Jeff that the coast was clear and they made their way back over.
I got my camera ready as they climbed the steps. Jeff got down on one knee. . . and Rachel’s beaming face quickly turned to confusion as he began to tie his shoelace. I couldn’t help but laugh. Once he finished “tying his shoe” he stood up with a ring box in hand. Of course, Rachel said yes! I snapped photo after photo of the proposal documenting their beautiful moment. Afterwards, a woman approached them with the news that she was watching nearby and had taped the whole thing!
It was a beautiful day for a proposal and engagement session. When we started our shoot, the wind kicked up. As a photographer, this was actually a good thing because it made for lots of hair movement in the photos. We walked around the entire memorial as they laughed and chatted about how excited they both were to be engaged.
The photos turned out great! Photos at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial are extra special because the Washington Monument and the Tidal Basin are in the distance. It was wonderful sharing this moment with them and helping Jeff surprise Rachel. If you want to document your proposal or book a session at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, let me know!
